We were genuinely excited to dine at Birdcage, especially given its reputation as one of, if not the best, Thai restaurants in Cairo. Unfortunately, our experience fell far short of those expectations. The disappointment started almost immediately with the complimentary shrimp crisps and dipping sauces. One sauce tasted overwhelmingly like tomato sauce and didn’t resemble anything we would associate with Thai cuisine. The second initially had flavors reminiscent of chimichurri, followed by a surprisingly heavy buttery taste. It was an unusual start, but we remained optimistic about the meal. We then ordered the Yam Neua Yang, described as a spicy beef salad with spring onions, tomatoes, lemongrass, lemon leaves, and coriander. Unfortunately, this was where the experience really went downhill. We each tried a few small bites and genuinely found the dish inedible. The flavor was extremely unpleasant and unlike any Thai beef salad we had experienced before. What made matters worse was that the dish sat almost untouched on our table for approximately 25 minutes without anyone checking on us or asking whether everything was okay. Eventually, I had to flag down a waiter and explain our concerns. To his credit, he handled the situation professionally and offered to remake the dish or substitute it for something else. We declined because, at that point, we were understandably skeptical and already had our main course on the way. We decided to wait and see whether the entrée would change our impression. Unfortunately, the wait became another issue. Our main course took at least 30 minutes to arrive, to the point where I once again had to flag down a waiter and ask where our meal was. For a relatively straightforward green curry, the wait seemed excessive. More disappointing was that when the dish eventually arrived, there was no acknowledgment of the delay, no explanation, and no apology. It simply arrived at the table as though nothing had happened. Between waiting approximately 25 minutes for someone to notice there was an issue with our appetizer and then having to personally inquire about an entrée that had taken more than 30 minutes to arrive, the lack of attentiveness became just as disappointing as the food itself. Our main course was the Keang Keiow Wan, chicken green curry with coconut milk and lemon leaves. Thankfully, this dish tasted much more familiar and recognizable as Thai cuisine. Unfortunately, it was also far too salty. It was edible and reasonably enjoyable, and we would rate it around 3.5/5, but after such a long wait, we expected considerably better. What makes this especially disappointing is Birdcage's reputation. When a restaurant is presented as one of Cairo's premier Thai dining experiences, expectations are understandably higher. Based on our meal, however, neither the food nor the service came close to living up to that reputation or the standard we expected from a restaurant of this caliber. We also witnessed another table return one of their entrées during our visit. We don't know what their specific issue was, so it would be unfair to speculate, but seeing another dish being returned certainly didn't inspire confidence given our own experience. There are much smaller and less celebrated Thai restaurants in Maadi serving food that, in our experience, feels more authentic, balanced, and consistent. For a restaurant with Birdcage's reputation, location, and standing in Cairo's dining scene, that simply shouldn't be the case. Birdcage can and should do better. We didn't arrive looking for something to criticize. Quite the opposite. We arrived excited to experience what we had repeatedly been told was some of the best Thai food in Cairo. Instead, we left disappointed by the food, the lengthy waits, and a level of service that seemed largely unaware of what was happening at our table. Perhaps we caught Birdcage on a particularly bad evening, but for a restaurant with this reputation, the experience we had simply wasn't good enough.
Had a wonderful dinner at Birdcage Thai and was impressed from start to finish. The restaurant has a beautiful atmosphere—warm lighting, elegant décor, and a relaxing setting that makes it perfect for a date night or a special meal with family and friends. I ordered the Pad Thai, and it was excellent. The noodles were cooked perfectly, the flavors were well balanced, and the ingredients tasted fresh. The presentation was also lovely, showing the care that goes into each dish. What stood out just as much as the food was the ambiance. The restaurant is tastefully designed with Thai-inspired details, comfortable seating, and a calm, upscale feel. It felt like a nice escape from the busy city outside. The service was friendly and attentive throughout the evening, and the overall experience exceeded my expectations. I would definitely come back to try more dishes from the menu and would highly recommend Birdcage Thai to anyone looking for delicious Thai food in a beautiful setting.
This war one of the best Thai Fried Rice I've ever had! Great vegetarian options. And incredible service. I'll definitely visit again multiple times in the next 2 weeks I'm here.
Wow. I ate at Birdcage restaurant- Thai food. It was absolutely INCREDIBLE!!!! Definitely one of the tastiest meals I’ve ever had in Egypt, and one of the best meals of my life. The decor is just gorgeous; the presentation of the food is impeccable, the service is fantastic… and then the food?! Absolutely delicious. Wow- please go here during your visit to Egypt. Plus, it’s in a super luxurious hotel which is super cool and gives it that wow factor. Mohamed was one of the best servers ever by the way! So kind and really went out of his way to make our night extra special!
Best Thai food I’ve ever had! 💯 Best Massaman lamb shank curry. Delicious seafood yellow curry. Tom Kha Gaee soup was splendid! 😋 Perfect wine pairing with belly dancer on the label. 💗 Wonderful ambience, lighting, seating, atmosphere so elegant. We highly recommend and will be back.
