The place was very hot because the air conditioning wasn't working. There is air conditioning in the family section, but they only allow families to sit there. If you're not with a family, they simply tell you that section is reserved for families. The staff rarely pay attention to customers as they walk around. It's almost impossible to order the same dish twice and receive it the same way—every visit, the dish is different. The "Mahrouqat" dishes (as they are named on the menu), which are mostly meat-based, have recently become mostly sauce with very little meat. Sometimes they serve complimentary salads, and other times they don't, with no consistency. On top of that, orders are brought out one dish at a time, with long and unexplained delays between each plate, making the overall dining experience frustrating.
A proper authentic Yemeni food experience in Cairo - a true "hole in the wall" type of establishment in the Dokki area, close to the Nile - which the late Anthony Bourdain would visit and enjoy the food. Simple in appearance, but the food was excellent. The Fahsa lamb stew served with mulawah bread was absolutely fantastic - a real star dish. The Yemeni soup broth starter was also great - packed with flavour. We also tried the Yemeni Lamb Mandi which so tender and flavourful, and served on a bed of Yemeni rice and with a side of the famous Yemeni Zahawig salsa. The service at Al Shebany was great - very friendly, quick, efficient and excellent- even though the waiter could barely speak English, he went out of his way to assist and help. We finished of the evening with a hot cup of Yemeni Adeni chai, which brews all day - soaking up the cardamon and tea spices - it was so good, we took a set of second cups take away to go. Highly recommend a visit when in Cairo!
